ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEILLANCE AT HANFORD FOR CY-1978

Environmental data collected during 1978 show continued compliance by Hanford with all applicable state and federal regulations. Data were collected for most environmental media including air, Columbia River water, external radiation, foodstuffs (milk, beef, eggs, poultry, and produce) and wildlife (deer, fish, and game birds), as well as soil and vegetation samples. In general, offsite levels of radionuclides attributable to Hanford operations during 1978 were indistinguishable from background levels

Application of the ERTS system to the study of Wyoming resources with emphasis on the use of basic data products

    Get PDF
Many potential users of ERTS data products and other aircraft and satellite imagery are limited to visual methods of analyses of these products. Illustrations are presented from Wyoming studies that have employed these standard data products for a variety of geologic and related studies. Possible economic applications of these studies are summarized. Studies include regional geologic mapping for updating and correcting existing maps and to supplement incomplete regional mapping; illustrations of the value of seasonal images in geologic mapping; specialized mapping of such features as sand dunes, playa lakes, lineaments, glacial features, regional facies changes, and their possible economic value; and multilevel sensing as an aid in mineral exploration. Examples of cooperative studies involving botanists, plant scientists, and geologists for the preparation of maps of surface resources that can be used by planners and for environmental impact studies are given

Modernity’s global applicability is most clearly marked by the Transatlantic Slave Trade in which millions of Africans were forcefully deported to the “New World.” Reading the economics of the trade and its diasporic implications yields a realization of the importance of sugar as a commodity and the plantation as means of production. Commencing with a memoiristic prelude centered in Coimbra, Portugal, the argument expands to an explanation of slavery in the mainland colonies of North America and its implications for race in the United States today

Growing Food, Growing Farmers: How First-Generation Farmers In Blue Ridge Appalachia Learn How To Farm And Find Access To Farm Land

This thesis research seeks to explain changes occurring on the Blue Ridge Appalachian landscape, as first-generation small-scale diversified farmers become invested in sustainable agriculture; learn how to farm; find access to farm land, and form resilient agricultural enterprises in Blue Ridge Appalachia. This thesis documents the importance of small-scale agriculture, beginning with a literature review and then through a discussion of aspiring, beginning, and experienced farmers in Blue Ridge Appalachia. Each stage represents an important transition for the farmer. However, the importance of mentoring echoes throughout each. By seeing what others have done, the aspiring farmer becomes engaged in farming as an occupation and lifestyle. Likewise, the beginning and experienced farmer gains strategies and confidence from their mentors and peers as they seek to form a sustainable livelihood in Blue Ridge Appalachia
